The 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) took place from 15 to 19 January 2024 in Davos, Switzerland. The meeting convened under the theme Rebuilding Trust, and featured over 200 sessions with leading public figures from politics, business, civil society, academia, media and culture. The meeting aimed to address the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing the world in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted lives, livelihoods and economies across the globe.

The meeting was attended by several heads of state and government, including Chinese Premier Li Qiang, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, among many others. They delivered special addresses on topics such as global cooperation, climate action, digital transformation, social inclusion, and regional stability.

Some of the highlights and outcomes of the meeting are as follows:

• Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced a new pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, and called for more international collaboration on green development and pandemic response. He also reaffirmed China’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
• French President Emmanuel Macron urged the world to adopt a new multilateralism that is more inclusive, effective and accountable. He also stressed the need to reform the global health system, strengthen the European Union, and support Africa’s development and security.
• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented his vision for a peaceful and prosperous Ukraine, and appealed for more international support for his country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also announced a new initiative to host a global summit on democracy and human rights in Kyiv in 2025.
• Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani highlighted Qatar’s role as a mediator and facilitator of dialogue in the Middle East and beyond. He also outlined Qatar’s efforts to diversify its economy, promote education and innovation, and host the FIFA World Cup 2022.
• US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the US is back to engage with the world and lead by example. He also outlined the Biden administration’s priorities, such as restoring alliances, advancing democracy and human rights, tackling the climate crisis, and competing with China.

The meeting also featured several sessions with top experts and leaders from various fields, such as technology, health, finance, education, culture, and sports. Some of the notable speakers and participants included:

• Dava Newman, Director of the MIT Media Lab, who spoke about the potential and challenges of satellite technology for global connectivity and sustainability.
• Francis Kéré, Nile Rodgers and Michelle Yeoh, who received the Crystal Awards 2024 for their outstanding contributions to the arts and culture, and their positive impact on society.
• Cameron Green and Tim David, who shared their insights and experiences as cricket players and ambassadors for the sport.
• Greta Thunberg, who delivered a powerful message to the world leaders and urged them to act urgently and decisively on the climate emergency.

The meeting also showcased the Forum’s various initiatives and platforms, such as the Global Collaboration Village, the Global Shapers Community, the Young Global Leaders, the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, and the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. These initiatives and platforms aim to foster cross-sectoral and intergenerational dialogue, collaboration and action on the most pressing issues facing the world.

The meeting concluded with a call for action from the Forum’s Founder and Executive Chairman, Professor Klaus Schwab, who said that the world needs a new “Davos Manifesto” that defines the principles and values for a more inclusive, sustainable and resilient future. He also announced that the next Annual Meeting will take place in Davos in January 2025, and will focus on the theme “The Great Reset”.

The Davos 2024 meeting was a unique opportunity for the world leaders and experts to exchange ideas, share best practices, and forge new partnerships for the common good of humanity. The meeting also demonstrated the Forum’s commitment to improving the state of the world, and its role as a platform for global cooperation and trust-building. As the world recovers from the pandemic and faces new challenges and opportunities, the Davos spirit of collaboration and innovation will be more important than ever.

Beyond Borders: India’s Impact on the World Stage:

This was a panel discussion that featured prominent Indian leaders and experts from various sectors, such as business, technology, culture, and social impact. They discussed how India is contributing to the global agenda and addressing the challenges of the 21st century, such as climate change, digital transformation, health and education, and regional stability. Some of the panelists included Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries; Nandan Nilekani, Co-Founder and Chairman of Infosys; Priyanka Chopra, Actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador; and Raghuram Rajan, Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

Satellites: The Next Frontier of Connectivity and Sustainability:

This was a session that explored the potential and challenges of satellite technology for enhancing global connectivity and sustainability. The session featured Dava Newman, Director of the MIT Media Lab, who spoke about the latest innovations and applications of satellites, such as providing internet access to remote areas, monitoring environmental changes, and supporting disaster relief. The session also highlighted the need for more collaboration and regulation to ensure the responsible and ethical use of satellite technology.

The Crystal Awards 2024:

This was a ceremony that honored three outstanding artists who have made positive contributions to society through their work. The awardees were Francis Kéré, an architect from Burkina Faso who designs sustainable and community-oriented buildings; Nile Rodgers, a musician and producer from the US who has created iconic songs and supported various causes; and Michelle Yeoh, an actor and producer from Malaysia who has starred in diverse roles and advocated for women’s empowerment and environmental protection. The ceremony featured performances and speeches by the awardees, as well as tributes from other artists and leaders.

Davos 2024 addressed climate change in several ways, such as:

• It made climate change one of the core themes of the meeting, along with nature and energy, under the banner of “A Long-Term Strategy for Climate, Nature and Energy” .
• It featured special addresses by world leaders who announced new pledges and initiatives to combat the climate crisis, such as Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who committed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, and French President Emmanuel Macron, who called for a new multilateralism that is more inclusive, effective and accountable on climate action .
• It hosted several sessions and panels with experts and stakeholders from various sectors, such as technology, finance, health, and education, who discussed the latest innovations and solutions for reducing emissions, enhancing resilience, and restoring ecosystems  .
• It showcased the Forum’s initiatives and platforms that aim to foster cross-sectoral and intergenerational collaboration and action on the most pressing climate issues, such as the Global Collaboration Village, the Global Shapers Community, the Young Global Leaders, and the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution .
• It honored three outstanding artists who have made positive contributions to society through their work on climate and nature, such as Francis Kéré, an architect who designs sustainable and community-oriented buildings, Nile Rodgers, a musician and producer who has created iconic songs and supported various causes, and Michelle Yeoh, an actor and producer who has advocated for women’s empowerment and environmental protection 

Some other notable speakers at Davos 2024 are:

• António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, who spoke about the need for more global solidarity and cooperation to address the challenges of the pandemic, climate change, inequality, and conflict.

• Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, who discussed the economic outlook and recovery prospects for 2024 and beyond, and called for more fiscal and monetary support, debt relief, and structural reforms.

• Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, who highlighted the importance of trade for growth, development, and resilience, and urged the members to reform the multilateral trading system and advance the negotiations on e-commerce, fisheries subsidies, and health.

• Ajay S. Banga, the President of the World Bank Group, who shared the Bank’s efforts and priorities to support the low- and middle-income countries, especially in terms of health, education, social protection, and digital inclusion.

• Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, who participated in a panel discussion on India’s impact on the world stage, and shared his views on the opportunities and challenges for India’s digital transformation, green development, and regional integration².

• Priyanka Chopra, the Actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, who also joined the panel on India’s impact on the world stage, and spoke about her work and passion for promoting education, empowerment, and equality for girls and women.

• Raghuram Rajan, the Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago and former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, who moderated the panel on India’s impact on the world stage, and provided his insights and analysis on the economic and social trends and issues affecting India and the world.

• Cameron Green and Tim David, the cricket players and ambassadors for the sport, who shared their insights and experiences as professional athletes and role models, and discussed the role of sports in fostering social cohesion, health, and well-being.

• Greta Thunberg, the climate activist and founder of Fridays for Future, who delivered a powerful message to the world leaders and urged them to act urgently and decisively on the climate emergency.
